Here's a Big 'Ole Muse Therapy Welcome to My Inaugural Guest Blogger...Kayelle Allen!!!

I'm Kayelle Allen and I am captive to my muse. Does that sound like the opening line at an AA meeting? Hmm. A twelve-step for freedom from my muses. That would be welcome indeed. Allow me to introduce them.

Both are characters from my books.

Pietas is the one who holds the devil's pitchfork but wears a halo. He tells me, "You know you want to do this. What's it going to hurt? You need to stretch your wings and try something new." Sounds good at first look, but Pietas isn't talking about writing. He's talking about everything but writing. "You know you want to read this book. It's great research. Oh, look! A great movie is on. You should watch that first. Study how the characters handle conflict. Make some popcorn while you're up." Uh-huh.

Luc is my good (?) muse. He's the one who dares me to write a scene where he stands up to Pietas and wins. Every time I try, Luc thinks it through, realizes that he has too much to lose, and ends up back peddling away from the confrontation.

Don't get me wrong. Luc's not intimidated by anyone else. In the rest of his life he's the master of all he surveys. However, Pietas is the leader of their people, he used to be in love with Luc (and claims to still care for him), but the ruler is also well known for his cruelty and devious ways. Humans who have interfaced with him over the millennia call him the Hammer of God, Soulripper, and the Beast. He's particularly fond of Soulripper.

Now, considering these are my muses, to whom I turn for inspiration, it's a miracle I write anything at all, other than a note to slip under the door saying "help… me…" ^_^

One thing I've learned over the past few years since I was first published is that you can't write only when you're inspired. Author Jack London wrote, "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." More and more, I believe that.

Waiting for something to happen is not my style. There are three kinds of people. Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. I'm the former. Why wait? Go grab your success and claim it. It's your life, after all. Who is better qualified?

I'm looking forward to having D.D. Scott come to my yahoo groups and teach us the secrets of Muse Therapy. Both mine could use it. Thankfully, I'm such a solid, well-rounded individual that I won't need therapy myself. Except maybe for that tendency to exaggerate. Not lie, mind you. That's altogether a different thing. Uh… I'll shut up now. I think that was Pietas talking.

And here's the scoop on my fabulous inaugural guest blogger:

Kayelle Allen released two books in March, At the Mercy of Her Pleasure on 3/23, and The Last Vhalgenn on 3/24. Her next book, For Women Only, is due June 1st, and she has one more in edits now for release later in the year. She's already hard at work on a sequel to Surrender Love and Surrender Trust, and hopes to have another trilogy finished by the new year. Kayelle is a multipublished romance author whose worldbuilding skills include a broad sweep of ten-thousand years of future history, a feline language, and tradestandard laws for the empire where her books take place. Her writing lures you inside each hero's head and seduces you with what he feels and thinks. She thrusts you into the hero's heart and mind, teases and satisfies you with his sexuality and sensual joys, and drags you onto the roller coaster with him when it plunges into the darkness of things-gone-wrong. Snap Plan 2010

Happy New Year!!!

I just finished my 2010 Snap Plan and wanted to share a bit about it!

What is a Snap Plan?

It's the D. D. Scott way - thanks to tips from fabulous YA 2010 debut author Kay Cassidy (http://www.kaycassidy.com)- of getting my intentions and goals on paper so I can then go for the gusto of achieving 'em.

After having big-time discussions with my SweetMan over the holidays, I've come to the conclusion that I'm driving myself nuts (I know...what a shock...LOL!) and probably my SweetMan too (also not much of a shock) by worrying beyond worrying about selling my manuscripts.

So here's the new year, new me, going for the gusto D. D. Scott Snap Plan 2010 Mission Statement:

"I'm focusing on my writing process and not my products.

I'm not fixated on the need to have something to show for my work. To sell...I must first write. So I'm not going to worry about selling my work...I'm just Julia Cameron-style "filling the form" by writing and building our AVON business (http://www.youravon.com/dawnwagner)

I always rush to the edge of the cliff. Not this year. 2010 is about taking the baby steps to our D. D. Scott dreams. My 2010 conceptual change is to respect and bask in where we are now - our present moment, not the big change that may/may not come. I'm not going to wallow in the big questions 'will/when will I sell' and 'when will/will we move to TN'. This year - 2010 - is all about honing my craft, filling the form, focusing on my writing process and inspiring others to do the same via Muse Therapy and growing our AVON business.

No trumpets will be sounding in 2010 to announce/herald our destiny. I'm not going to focus on grand change, but rather creatively husband our present - our home, our relationships, and my jobs (as a full-time writer, Muse "Therapist", and AVON Representative-Sales Leader)."

Sounds pretty fabulous, doesn't it? And you betchya I'm on it and on my way to making it my (and SweetMan's too) reality!

Here's a peek from a single mom and mad scientist by day job and an unpublished writer of elf stories...

"I don't know how else to describe it other than to describe where I was and
where I am now. Once upon a time, my muse and I worked together and the words
flowed like... a steady stream after a night's worth of good rain. Then one day
(lol, I remember the date: December 1998) the stream went dry and nothing
emerged. No words, no thoughts. Nothing that could remotely be described as
creative happened. I was totally lost. Devastated. Then I took a big leap of chance and took this workshop (the only way I would let myself take this workshop was to argue with myself that I would not lurk (like I do on just about every other board, loop, class I've ever been a part of), but had to participate in order to fully experience what I personally needed to experience). And things opened up for me. And boy did it help me. Like I said, I can now hear my muse and see her. She talks to me daily about life, liberty, and the pursuit of a villain for the wip. I now dream again. Good dreams. Dreams of stories. Like I used to way back when (not
as many, but they're slowly increasing in number and vividness).

I do not have the words to aptly convey the joy I experience on a daily
basis having reconnected with that lost part of myself. I know that my journey
to self reclamation is not done yet, but I'm not afraid of it AND, more
important, I now recognize that I am the captain of this ship -- both internal and
external. My muse is no longer an elusive Greek myth, but a reality that is
incorporated inside me. Once I made that realization, then it opened up all
sorts of revelations like...I can fix me (don't know about you, but trying to
fix an elusive Greek myth is sort of, well, nigh to impossible comes to mind)
and I can believe in me and my abilities, because I already do -- now I just have
more to believe in.

I know that I still have some issues (like getting back to the keyboard) to work
through with my muse self, but it's okay. I'm not afraid of it. And I can't
thank you, DD, enough for presenting this workshop when you did -- the timing was
just perfect for me in more ways than I can count."

And here's a bit on the Muse Therapy experience from a military wife and cancer survivor:

"Hi, all! I'm Rita (name changed for privacy), and I live in Eastern Washington near the border with Idaho. I've been writing ever since I could string two words
together and hold a crayon (long before home computers, I'm afraid), and I've
never once given a thought to my muse. I've spent years honing my craft -- studying scene and sequel, MR units, characterization, etc, but not a second on my muse. I don't have a name for her -- never cared about her. So why am I here?

Last month I was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery. I'll be fine caught early and all that), but it was a brush with mortality that reminded me how short and precious life is. Right on the heels of that I found out that my husband will be going on a 6 month deployment to Afghanistan starting late this winter. While he's gone I will have the fun of moving my family to the other coast and getting them settled there to await his return. With all this going on, I have been advised by well-meaning friends to "get my priorities straight" and concentrate on what's important. By this, they mean for me to quit writing and get done what they think is important. Every time some well meaning person says that there is a small voice in the back of my head that starts screaming that I won't make it without her -- I
think that's my muse, and I think she's right. So here I am.

I'm starting from scratch, and I have the feeling my muse may be a little dusty and bruised from abuse, but I think meeting her may be the most important thing I do this month (right up there with the wound care I'm still dealing with from surgery earlier this month). Please forgive me if I'm a little slow, but I'm new to this."

Muse Therapy, Christmas in Oz & Holiday Movie Magic!

Ohhh yeahhhh...bring on the holidays!

I'm a Holiday Nut...yes, I'm "crazy" as in that kind of "nut" too...but nothing gets my muses going like The Holidays...D. D. Scott goes all-out nuts for The Holidays!!!

For example, each year I decorate my home with a brand new holiday theme! Drum roll please - to the beat of Amy Grant's "The Christmas Collection" CD as that's my holiday music of choice - this year's theme is "Christmas in Oz"! Our home will become Emerald City...complete with a Yellow Brick Road leading to our all-things-green, Oz-tastic Christmas tree (thanks goes to my fabulous niece Sam for that idea!)!!!

Oh...and the topper for the tree will be this huge, huge iron cornucopia turned upside down and spray-painted metallic, sparkling emerald green (of course)...why?!...that's the Wicked Witch's hat!!! They'll be tons of flying monkeys helping Santa's elves this year too!!! And the holiday cocktail of choice will be something made with Creme de Menthe!

Now...besides each year's over-the-top theme, I indulge in a bunch of way beyond terrific holiday movies! Here's my list:

Harlequin's 60th Bday Party...And The Winner Is...

Writing Tips and Tidbits From RWA D.C.: Linda Howard, The Keeper of the Nuts

Back with another "tips and tidbits" anecdote from RWA D.C....prepare to organize your nuthouse!

That's right...start taking stock of the "nuts" in your life...and keep writing no matter what the hell they're up to.

Today, I'm passing-on NYT's bestselling author Linda Howard's advice on how to write through anything. And damn, if she doesn't mean anything!

Thursday, July 16th, at RWA D.C., we were lucky enough to attempt to eat a fabulous lunch at the Marriott Wardman Park Washington D.C. I say "attempt" because it was tough to swallow let alone digest food due to Linda's beyond-hilarious keynote luncheon speech.

Linda set out to prove to us that she was the most prepared woman in the room to embark on and succeed in a writing career. She's adamant she made it in the publishing business because she is the organizer of her personal nuthouse. And she'd learned from the best how to stand-out in a crowd. After all, it was her mother that had pork chops (still warm) in her purse when Linda and her friends got hungry at a concert and the food vendor lines were out of control.

Linda encouraged us to always be prepared for success by learning how to keep writing...through anything.

Sounds like she should know...

For her, when you have a brother and EX "stupid slut" sister-in-law ("Bless her heart") - and those are all Linda's words...not mine...LOL!!! - you live in a nuthouse. When said people concoct a trip around the neighborhood with ex SIL in her wheelchair (after surgery) being pulled with a bungee cord by dear brother on his tractor, you live in a nuthouse. When these same family members attempt to travel up and over a bigger-than-big hill 'til the cord springs into action, you live in a nuthouse. Then do it again further down the block. Well...you get the picture!!!

And you now know why I couldn't finish my dessert and coffee unless I wanted to gag and/or choke between laughs.

Linda said she wasn't just the keeper of the nuts. She seemed to attract them too! Just like the rest of us do on our writing-to-publication journey.

But not to worry...Linda says we just need to "hang in there". "Do the best [we] can". "And when the nuts fall, take cover".

Writing Tips and Tidbits From RWA D.C.: Janet Evanovich's Jelly Donuts & Reduction Sauce

So here it is...the launch of my blog series "Writing Tips and Tidbits From RWA D.C."!

For those of you who don't know, Romance Writers of America (RWA) held its annual national conference in Washington D.C. July 15th thru 18th. Over 3,000 of the romance publishing industry's best were there - everyone from best-selling authors to editors and agents to publicists to librarians and booksellers to big-time media people. I couldn't imagine a better way to start this blog series than with a few fun and fabulous tips from Janet Evanovich's Opening Session.

Janet spoke to us Thursday, July 16th while standing...that's right...standing on her broken foot! What a gal! She'd fallen off a stage during one of her book tour stops just a few days before but went "on with the show"...now that's one tough woman!!!

Janet cut-up with, cried and cussed with all of us as she told us about her climb from the slush piles to the bestselling star she is today. Did you know her Stephanie Plum series is now 15-years-old? Now you do!

Janet's chat with us was thrilling, but I really think she hit home with my carb-lovin' muses when she related writing to Jelly Donuts and Reduction Sauce! Here's the scoop:

"We're all like big fat jelly donuts," Janet said when enlightening us with her take on our process as writers.

The jelly, she explained, is our creativity. It's our job, as writers, to squeeze out that jelly from each of our own holes. Whatever it is that pulls our trains, that's the hole from which we squirt-out our creative jelly!

Fun stuff...don't you think?!

Janet told us she doesn't believe in writer's block, rather she thinks of writer's block as fear that she overcomes by "showing up for work every day". She said she writes slow. Very slow. She thinks longer and more than she writes, which brought us to another jewel of writing wisdom - Evanovich style.

Janet said, "I'm a Reduction Sauce Writer. I put all the crap in the pot, boil it down, then get the three or four sentences of 'essence' that makes it easy for my readers."

"I just put my ass in my chair," she said, "then analyze my style and formula. What do readers like about Janet Evanovich?"

She advised us to know who we are to our readers and to Never, NEVER save anything or hold back for the next book. Find a way to use it now, she cautioned, then "just pray other things come later too!"

Following an ornery, soul-filled giggle, Janet thought only a moment before answering an Actor's Studio-style final question...How would she liked to be greeted at the Pearly Gates?

Janet's answer? "Hello, Bitch!"
